I started making this documentary nearly six years ago. As a middle class, convent educated woman who had experienced substance abuse issues myself, I wanted to understand more about how and why my eldest daughter became a table top dancer and had been a long term heroin addict, and why my younger daughter suffered from such a debilitating anxiety disorder that she’d become suicidal.

What emerged beneath the surface of all our lives was evidence of repeated family patterns of early childhood sexual abuse, profound parental emotional neglect, as well as drug and alcohol addictions. Dancing Girl looks at the phenomena of buried memory, and how events that have occurred during childhood are frequently forgotten by the conscious mind, yet are played out in life through low self esteem and aberrant behaviours such as drug addiction, anxiety disorders, depression, suicide, self harm, risky behaviour, dependency on prescription drugs, depression, hopelessness & failure to achieve emotional and financial stability. Through the journey of this film, my daughters and I explore the ways these themes have played themselves out in our lives, and examine the measures we have taken in our efforts to heal ourselves and become whole, functional and happy women.
